PTR - Energy within reach

Czech company Hedviga Group from its originaly small research project on fuel enrichment has created a new direction and focus on the development, manufacture and installation of technology for slow, non-oxidative thermal decomposition of organic matter as well as fuel and energy production.

Hedviga last year significantly presented itself in Astana at Expo 2017, and this year at IFAT in Munich the company, except the PTR technology also presented a complete Enerkal solution for the utilization of sewage sludge. Technical Director Petr Cuber, who is in company Hedviga in charge of the development of PTR technology, must often respond to skeptic questions of his clients such as "how does the technology work, what does it do, how to fill the technology and what to do next with the fuel…?" but nobody has doubts about the PTR process, functionality and efficiency, he says with a smile.

Hedviga in the PTR project has combined successful research and implementation of what's behind it?

These are years of work in seclusion, beyond the main field of view, and last but not least the huge advantage of non-academic access and constraints. We have never had the ambition to build a small lab and everything we have tried and are still trying, we manufacture and test only where it makes sense and where it can create an economically lively and nowadays so-needed environmentally functional system.

PTR technology has a wide range of utilzation of input materials, starting with waste and finishing with biomass. That gives us a huge advantage but also the necessary care and rigidity in the project preparation. That is why we always make sure so that we always describe the raw materials, identify them, test them, and then propose solutions tailored to the client.

But yet this is a business strategy, are you different in it than let's say suppliers of similar technologies?

We do not follow other technologies, that is what our clients do. We often find out that they go around 10-15 other companies and then they come to us because we offer solutions from taking over the raw materials to how to efficiently utilize everything what PTR technology produces. We calculate and design the project, including the fact that it must be self-sustaining both energetically and financially.

We offer a mobile and complex unit that is capable of evolving as the client evolves, because what we sent to China as a raw material last year, is now problematic but well outsorted plastic, dirty though, unusable in an incinerator and cannot be disposed by landfilling. In addition, we are solving the utilization of sewage sludge as a raw material for farmers in the Enerkal project.

Last year EXPO 2017, this year you were at the IFAT in Munich. Is this a new PR?

First, it was an interesting challenge, especially at the EXPO in Astana, where we outside Europe and beyond our local influences introduced, what we Czechs know. We are very proud that we were in Astana and that we Czechs won the third place. We came back from IFAT a few days ago and we have to say it was the first such big trade fair for us. We had a booth at pavilion B6 in the midst of companies offering crushers and separators of plastics and other materials, and among them protruded our PTR technology, which uses e.g. plastics to produce electricity and fuel. We were constantly busy on the booth! However, we went there mainly to introduce our new PTR 1000 Enerkal, technology for processing sewage sludge and production of fertilizers. Therefore we introduced this solution at IFAT in Munich because there are experts and people looking for technical solutions.

What are your future plans?

We have succeeded in obtaining a patent in the USA and Canada next to the European patent, which opened up new markets for us. We have already had our first reference PTR in Great Britain, so we are now staying at home and concentrating on the production of PTR equipment for the Czech Republic. At present, two PTR units for the Czech market for installation in 2018 and 2019 are produced.
